You wouldn’t believe this flooding
The water damage in my apartment
The dripping ceiling, the stains
The shredded drywall and insulation
Falling out of bed into two feet of cold,
Cold water on the floor
Out of breath, thrashing sick
Wishing I could drown
Water cascading through the open door
Pressure like glass breaking;
Drains and gutters, gone…
Gone
You wouldn’t believe the flooding
The liquid ceiling, waves above it
You wouldn’t believe the flooding
Shredded dry wall, stains above it
I left the shower on didn’t I?
the toilet exploded didn’t I?
The streets are up to my neck
And I’ve had it up to here:
The sirens are approaching, more like closing in
More like shattering glass
Or at least splicing hairs in my inner ear
You wouldn’t believe the flooding
A melted ceiling, stains above it
You wouldn’t believe the flooding
Shredded dry wall, stains above it
And I’m all the way up to the ceiling
With my ear to the door
To the lock turning the key
Seeing how much water I can drink
To inflate my lungs,
To make me buoyant,
To make me float away
Away...
The bodies laid out on the roughed up carpet
With psychiatric precision
This must have happened at least twenty-four hours ago
But somehow I don’t remember
